SUMMER FRUIT (Monday, July 14): Hold on, Landon, I’ll be right back. Lincoln. I’ll be right back. Oh, hold on just a second. Hey, getting ready to go out and play a little baseball with Landon and Lincoln. They love baseball. You know this time of year it gets hot and you’re running and you’re jumping. You know, that’s why we need a lot more peaches and nectarines in the summertime. You know, all this week we’re going to talk about why we have certain fruits and vegetables in the summer versus winter and spring and fall. We have beautiful…I know we can get these 365 days out of the year, but why in the world are they peak of the season in the summertime? Here’s why. Because we’re on the go a little bit more in the summer. We’re out playing baseball with the kids. Our muscles need more potassium. Why is that? Potassium helps prevent leg cramps. Who wants a leg cramp in the summertime? You’re out running and biking. Oh, no! That’s why we have peaches and nectarines. So go grab a whole bunch of peaches and nectarines before you go out and play baseball with the kids. I’ll see you in just a minute. I’m Michael Marks…Your Produce Man. Coming, Landon…Lincoln.
TEASE: Hey, in my next Produce Man report, before you go play baseball with the kids or grandkids, eat a peach. (Takes Bite)
SUMMER SQUASH (Tuesday, July 15) You know, I know most produce items you can get 365 days out of the year, but when I started produce, you know, like 31 years ago summer squash was summer squash. You know, zucchini, yellow squash, and patty pans. You know, even the round squash. All of those are what we call summer squash. Now there’s a reason there’s summer squash and winter squash. There is a real reason why. First of all, summer squash. Why should we eat more summer squash in the summer? Well, here’s why. These are loaded with moisture. What do our bodies need in the summertime? Yeah, it’s hot. It needs more moisture. Plus these have fewer calories. That’s the last thing our bodies need is more calories in the summertime. In the wintertime we need more calories. That’s why winter squash is better in the winter, but for the summer, summer squash. Right now is peak of the season and you’re finding all kinds of different varieties of beautiful summer squash for your summer eating. I’m Michael Marks…Your Produce Man.

SALAD (Wednesday, July 16): You know all this week we’re talking about why we should eat certain fruits and vegetables that we think of in the summer only in the summer…well, we should eat them all year round. You know, that’s not the point. But there are certain fruits and vegetables we think of for summer that really should be eaten in the summer. Now, one of those – lettuces. I love salads. Now my wife has to have a salad like every single day, and bless her heart, that’s great, and it’s really good for you. But you know in the summer, you know one of the things your body does not need? Your body does not need a lot of calories. See when you take in a lot of calories, your body has to work really hard to burn off those calories. Now, when it burns off those calories, how do you feel? Hot. That’s the last thing you need – when it’s hot outside is to be hot inside. So you need fewer calories in the summer. Well, guess what? Salad produces fewer calories so get out your red leaf. Get out your green leaf. Get out your iceberg. Get out your fresh cut lettuces. Whatever it is, eat more salads in the summer. There’s a reason why. I’m Michael Marks…Your Produce Man.
TEASE: Hey, in my next Produce Man report, why we should eat more summer salads in the summer.
MELONS (Thursday, July 17): You know all this week we’ve been having fun talking about why we eat certain fruits and vegetables in the summertime and wintertime and fall. Have you ever wondered why you have apples in the fall? We need more fiber in the fall. Ever wonder why we have oranges in the winter? Well, we need more vitamin C in the winter. Have you ever wondered why we have strawberries in the spring? Because we need some vitamin A to kickstart our eyes. Well, what about the summertime? Melons. Oh my goodness! That’s right. Melons. You walk in the produce section and you see a huge display of watermelon, canteloupe, honeydew, and all the different varieties of melons. It’s peak of the season right now, which means the best prices and the best quality. That means the best flavor. So why melons in the summertime? Guess what? It’s hot outside, and the one thing our body needs is to cool off and to stay cool. This is like 95% water. Our bodies need more water in the summertime. So that’s why melons are best eaten in the summer. I’m Michael Marks…Your Produce Man.
TEASE: Hey, in my next Produce Man report…man, our bodies are 68% water. This is 95% water.
GRAPES (Friday, July 18): Hold on, I’m coming. (Huffs) Oh man, I just got done playing a little baseball with the boys. That Landon is a hitter, and he makes me run for those baseballs. You know all this week we’re talking about why we should eat certain fruits and vegetables in the certain seasons. And grapes, I know we can get grapes like 365 days of the year although this year it’s 366 days, but grapes are a summer fruit. That’s why we call them summer table grapes. Now what’s the one thing we’re doing in the summer? We are out playing whether it’s at the lake, at the pond, or out playing baseball…whatever we’re doing, we’re just working out a lot more in the summertime. So what’s the one thing you need? To recover quicker. Yeah, recover quicker. That’s why red grapes, green grapes – loaded with antioxidants. Hey, Jerry Rice was a famous football player. After every workout, man, he would eat two pounds of red grapes. It would help him recover after the workout. I’m Michael Marks…Your Produce Man. (Take bite) Mmm
