Grapes of Wonder

I am so excited. You know this time of year there’s a lot of seed companies that are harvesting their fall crops of new fruits and vegetables.  And there are a lot of grape growers and stone fruit growers harvesting new varieties of peaches, plums, nectarines, and grapes. I’m very excited about this. I am very excited about some of the new Grapes growers are working on. You won’t find any of these grapes in the supermarket right now, but over the next few years, you will start seeing these brand new grapes. The one that I am most excited about looks pretty ordinary. In fact, it looks like a green seedless Grape. But when you take a bite out of it, you’re going to wonder in you’re mind, “What does that taste like?” And you’re going to think state fair - cotton candy. That’s exactly what it tastes like. In fact, the varietal name is cotton candy. Very, very cool! It’s not out yet, but we’ll see it probably in a couple of years. This is very cool! The second one is also going to be a great tasting grape. The Muscat grape is one of the oldest grapes grown on earth. You may have heard of Muscat wine. Well, Muscat Grapes may have great flavor, but they are full of seeds. So guess what growers have been working on? That’s right. They have made the Red Muscat Grape…seedless. And it is fantastic. The third new Grape I am excited about looks like it belongs on a Star Trek episode. The grapes are in the shape of chile peppers. They are a sweet seedless grape, but the cluster of grapes look like a cluster of chile peppers. Very, very cool.  Grapes of Wonder.
